The Premium Choice

Decking that ages beautifully, not badly.

Hardwood is denser and naturally more durable than standard softwood timber, with a high natural oil content that resists rot and insect damage without needing the same level of chemical treatment. It costs more up front, but it's the closest thing to a lifetime deck we install.

Left untreated, it weathers to an attractive silver-grey over time — similar to cedar. If you'd rather keep the rich, deep tone it starts with, an occasional oil does the job. Either way, the timber itself is built to handle whatever the Kent weather throws at it.

  • ✓Dense, naturally durable timber
  • ✓Resists rot & insect damage naturally
  • ✓Built to last decades, not years
  • ✓Ages to a striking silver-grey, or stays rich with oil
  • ✓Smooth-planed or grooved board finishes
  • ✓Solid subframe — no give, no bounce
Finishes & Layouts

Styles we build.

We can bring sample boards to your quote so you can see the tone and grain before you commit.

Oiled Hardwood Finish

An annual oil keeps the rich, deep original tone of the timber looking as good as day one — a favourite for decking close to the house.

Naturally Weathered Finish

Left untreated, hardwood weathers to a striking silver-grey over time — no maintenance required, just a different look.

Smooth-Planed Boards

A clean, refined finish underfoot — popular for decking close to the house or anywhere bare feet are likely.

Grooved & Reeded Boards

Ridged boards that add extra grip when wet, and a bit more visual texture than a flat smooth finish.

Raised & Multi-Level Decking

Built up on a solid subframe to level out sloped ground, or stepped down in stages for a multi-level layout.

Steps, Edging & Trims

Hardwood steps and edging finished to match the decking itself, for a job that looks considered right to the last board.

Hardwood, Timber Or Composite?

An honest comparison, not just a sales pitch.

All three are good options — it depends what you're optimising for. We install all of them, so we've no reason to steer you toward the pricier one.

Choose Hardwood If…

You want the richest, most premium natural look, exceptional durability without heavy chemical treatment, and you're happy to invest more up front for a deck that can outlast standard softwood by decades.

“After a terrible winter, I searched for someone to quote me for a raised decking area for this summer. After three separate quotes, Mark was the only one who said a few things the other two never did.

So we chose him to make us a five-metre-square area for garden furniture and a BBQ to sit alongside our pond.

It's perfect and we're glad we added the gazebo over the top for our vine plants to grow over.

A big well done.”

“Brilliant service from start to finish. Mark turned up when he said he would, quote was clear, and the finished job looks spot on.

Left everything tidy too.”

“What impressed me was an immediate answer to my call with no automated voice giving me several options.

So thank you to Mark for showing up on time for an estimate and on time with his son with the supplies the following Monday, and for an excellent job done in one day.

Both Mark and his son worked well together and cleared away all debris and left our back garden clean and tidy.”

Hardwood Decking FAQs

Common questions about hardwood decking.

Anything else, just ask when you get in touch — happy to talk through the specifics of your garden.

Our standard timber decking uses pressure-treated softwood. Hardwood decking uses a naturally dense, durable species with a high natural oil content, which resists rot and insect damage without needing the same chemical treatment — it's a heavier, longer-lasting board with a richer natural colour.

Not strictly. Left untreated, hardwood weathers naturally to an attractive silver-grey, similar to cedar. If you'd rather keep the rich, deep original tone, an occasional oiling — usually once a year — will maintain the colour. Either way, the timber itself is built to last.

With proper installation and basic care, hardwood decking can last several decades — significantly longer than standard softwood timber. Its natural density and oil content are what give it that longevity.

It depends on the species and specification, but hardwood generally sits as a premium option alongside composite. Both offer excellent longevity — the difference comes down to whether you want the look and feel of natural timber or a fully synthetic, zero-maintenance board. We're happy to price both when we quote.

We can source dense, naturally durable hardwood species such as Balau or Ipe, depending on availability and your budget. We're happy to talk through the options and show samples when we quote.

Most residential hardwood decking projects take 3–5 days, depending on the size of the area and ground preparation needed. We'll give you an accurate timeframe as part of your free quote.

We're based in Medway and regularly install hardwood decking across Maidstone, Sittingbourne, Gravesend and the surrounding Kent villages. If you're just outside these areas, get in touch anyway — we may still be able to help.
