The Classic Choice

Timber decking, warm and natural, built by hand.

Still the right choice for a lot of gardens. Timber has a warmth and grain that composite can't fake, built on solid, properly spaced joists so it stays firm underfoot — and it's kinder to your budget from the start than composite.

The trade-off is a bit of upkeep: an oil or stain every year or two keeps it looking its best and protects it against Kent's damp winters. It's a straightforward job, and one a lot of our customers actually enjoy — a Saturday afternoon that keeps the deck looking exactly the way they wanted it in the first place.

  • ✓Natural warmth composite can't match
  • ✓More budget-friendly to install
  • ✓Built on solid, properly spaced joists
  • ✓Can be stained or oiled to match your garden
  • ✓Smooth-planed or grooved board finishes
  • ✓Raised, stepped & multi-level layouts
Boards & Layouts

Styles we build.

Not sure what would suit your garden? Get in touch and we'll talk it through when we quote.

Smooth-Planed Boards

A clean, refined finish underfoot — a popular choice for decking close to the house or anywhere bare feet are likely.

Grooved & Reeded Boards

Ridged boards that add extra grip when wet, and a bit more visual texture than a flat smooth finish.

Pressure-Treated Softwood

Our standard timber — treated to resist rot and insect damage, and takes stain or oil well for years of protection.

Raised & Multi-Level Decking

Built up on a proper joist frame to level out sloped ground, or stepped down in stages for a multi-level garden layout.

Built-In Seating & Planters

Bench seating, raised planters or storage built straight into the decking frame, rather than added on afterwards.

Balustrades & Steps

Timber balustrades, handrails and steps for raised decking — built to the right height and properly fixed.

Timber Or Composite?

An honest comparison, not just a sales pitch.

Both are good options — it depends what you're optimising for. We install both, so we've no reason to steer you toward the pricier one.

Choose Timber If…

You want the warmest, most natural look and feel, you'd prefer a lower upfront cost, or you don't mind an annual oil or stain to keep it looking its best.

Choose Composite If…

You want zero ongoing maintenance, you're not keen on annual staining, or you'd rather pay more up front than spend weekends on upkeep every year. See our composite decking page for more.

“After a terrible winter, I searched for someone to quote me for a raised decking area for this summer. After three separate quotes, Mark was the only one who said a few things the other two never did.

So we chose him to make us a five-metre-square area for garden furniture and a BBQ to sit alongside our pond.

It's perfect and we're glad we added the gazebo over the top for our vine plants to grow over.

A big well done.”

“Brilliant service from start to finish. Mark turned up when he said he would, quote was clear, and the finished job looks spot on.

Left everything tidy too.”

“What impressed me was an immediate answer to my call with no automated voice giving me several options.

So thank you to Mark for showing up on time for an estimate and on time with his son with the supplies the following Monday, and for an excellent job done in one day.

Both Mark and his son worked well together and cleared away all debris and left our back garden clean and tidy.”

Timber Decking FAQs

Common questions about timber decking.

Anything else, just ask when you get in touch — happy to talk through the specifics of your garden.

As standard we use pressure-treated softwood — it's durable, cost-effective and takes stain or oil well. If you'd rather a premium hardwood finish, that's a separate service; we're happy to talk through the difference when we quote.

Most timber decking benefits from a fresh coat of decking oil or stain every 1–2 years, more often in shaded or damp spots. It's a straightforward job that keeps the timber protected and looking its best — we're happy to advise on products when we install.

Yes — hardwood decking is a separate, premium option with its own richer tone and finish. If you're weighing up timber against hardwood or composite, we're happy to talk through all three when we quote.

Most timber decking projects take 2–4 days, depending on the size of the area and whether it's raised, stepped or built on a slope. We'll give you an accurate timeframe as part of your free quote.

Yes. We build a proper joist frame set on posts or padstones, which lets us level out sloped or uneven ground rather than being limited by it — common in parts of Kent near the Downs.

We fit both smooth-planed and grooved (reeded) boards in standard widths, and can incorporate built-in seating, planters, balustrades and steps into the design where needed.

We're based in Medway and regularly install timber decking across Maidstone, Sittingbourne, Gravesend and the surrounding Kent villages. If you're just outside these areas, get in touch anyway — we may still be able to help.
