Shape, Shade & Structure

A pergola turns empty space into somewhere to sit.

A pergola doesn't need walls or a full roof to change how a garden feels — just posts, beams and a bit of structure overhead to turn an open patio or deck into a defined space, whether that's for climbing plants to grow into, string lights for evening use, or simply a frame that draws the eye toward where you sit.

We build pergolas both freestanding and attached directly to the house, usually running off an existing deck or patio so the whole space reads as one considered design rather than two separate additions.

  • ✓Attached or freestanding designs
  • ✓Solid, concrete-set posts & beams
  • ✓Slatted or solid roof options
  • ✓Built into a decking project, or standalone
  • ✓Ready for climbing plants or string lighting
  • ✓Matched timber finish to your fencing or decking
Which Pergola Fits Your Garden?

Styles we build.

Not sure what would suit your space? Get in touch and we'll talk it through when we quote.

Attached Pergolas

Fixed to the house wall, extending your outdoor living space directly off a doorway or bifold doors.

Freestanding Pergolas

Built as a standalone structure anywhere in the garden, over a patio, deck or seating area.

Pergolas Over Decking

Built directly into a decking project as one combined structure, rather than added on as an afterthought.

Trellis & Climbing-Plant Sides

Open-sided panels for jasmine, wisteria or climbing roses to grow into over time.

Slatted Roof

The classic pergola look — timber slats laid across the top for dappled, partial shade.

Solid Roof

A solid or polycarbonate panel roof for fuller weather protection, while keeping the open-sided pergola feel.

The Structural Side

What goes into a pergola.

The parts underneath are what decide whether it's still standing square in ten years.

Concrete-Set Posts

Set below ground in concrete, the same way we set fence posts, so the structure doesn't shift or lean over time.

Solid Beam & Rafter Construction

Properly sized beams and rafters, jointed and fixed to carry the weight of climbing plants, lighting or a solid roof panel.

Roof Options

Classic slatted timber for dappled shade, or a solid or polycarbonate roof panel for more weather protection.

Matched Timber Finish

Stained or treated to match your existing fencing or decking, so it reads as one design rather than an add-on.

What Our Customers Say

“After a terrible winter, I searched for someone to quote me for a raised decking area for this summer. After three separate quotes, Mark was the only one who said a few things the other two never did.

So we chose him to make us a five-metre-square area for garden furniture and a BBQ to sit alongside our pond.

It's perfect and we're glad we added the gazebo over the top for our vine plants to grow over.

A big well done.”

“Brilliant service from start to finish. Mark turned up when he said he would, quote was clear, and the finished job looks spot on.

Left everything tidy too.”

“What impressed me was an immediate answer to my call with no automated voice giving me several options.

So thank you to Mark for showing up on time for an estimate and on time with his son with the supplies the following Monday, and for an excellent job done in one day.

Both Mark and his son worked well together and cleared away all debris and left our back garden clean and tidy.”

Pergolas FAQs

Common questions about pergolas.

Anything else, just ask when you get in touch — happy to talk through the specifics of your garden.

A pergola is typically an open structure — posts and an overhead beam or slatted roof, often designed with climbing plants and partial shade in mind. A gazebo usually has a fully solid or covered roof and is built more for shelter from the rain. We build pergolas; if you're picturing something fully enclosed, let us know and we can talk through what would suit what you're after.

Both. Attached pergolas run off the house wall, usually over an existing patio or deck; freestanding ones can go anywhere in the garden. We'll advise on what suits your space when we quote.

Yes, in most cases. We can set posts into an existing hard surface, or build the pergola into a new decking project as one combined structure.

It depends on the roof style. A classic slatted timber roof gives dappled, partial shade, while a solid or polycarbonate panel roof gives fuller cover. We're happy to talk through which suits how you'll use the space.

Most garden pergolas fall under permitted development, with similar rules to other garden structures around height and proximity to boundaries. There are exceptions near conservation areas, so we're happy to flag anything relevant when we quote.

Most pergolas are completed in 2–3 days, depending on size and whether it's built alongside a new decking project. We'll give you an accurate timeframe as part of your free quote.

We're based in Medway and regularly build pergolas across Maidstone, Sittingbourne, Gravesend and the surrounding Kent villages. If you're just outside these areas, get in touch anyway — we may still be able to help.
